Prerequisites

Before installing the Stellar MCP Plugins, ensure you have the following tools installed.

Required for Both Plugins

Rust & Cargo

The plugins are written in Rust and installed via Cargo.

# Install Rust
curl https://sh.rustup.rs -sSf | sh
 
# Verify installation
rustc --version
cargo --version

Stellar CLI

The Stellar CLI is required as the base for these plugins.

# Install via the official script
curl -sSL https://stellar.org/install | bash
 
# Or install via Cargo
cargo install stellar-cli
 
# Verify installation
stellar --version

[!NOTE] You need Stellar CLI version 23.0+ for plugin support.

WebAssembly Target

Required for compiling Soroban contracts:

rustup target add wasm32-unknown-unknown

For TypeScript MCP Servers

If you plan to generate TypeScript MCP servers:

Node.js

Version 18 or higher is required.

# Check your version
node --version
 
# Should be v18.x or higher

pnpm (Recommended)

We recommend pnpm for faster, more reliable package management.

# Install pnpm
npm install -g pnpm
 
# Verify
pnpm --version

For Python MCP Servers

If you plan to generate Python MCP servers:

Python

Version 3.10 or higher is required.

# Check your version
python3 --version
 
# Should be 3.10.x or higher

uv Package Manager

We use uv for fast Python dependency management.

# Install uv
pip install uv
 
# Or with pipx
pipx install uv
 
# Verify
uv --version

stellar-contract-bindings

Required for Python bindings generation:

uv pip install stellar-contract-bindings

[!TIP] The stellar-contract-bindings package version should be 0.5.0+ for best compatibility.

Quick Verification

Run these commands to verify all prerequisites are installed:

# Core tools
rustc --version          # Rust compiler
cargo --version          # Rust package manager
stellar --version        # Stellar CLI
 
# For TypeScript
node --version           # Node.js 18+
pnpm --version           # pnpm package manager
 
# For Python
python3 --version        # Python 3.10+
uv --version             # uv package manager

Common Issues

”stellar: command not found”

Make sure the Stellar CLI is in your PATH:

# Add to your shell profile (~/.bashrc, ~/.zshrc, etc.)
export PATH="$HOME/.stellar:$PATH"

“rustup target add fails”

Try updating rustup first:

rustup update
rustup target add wasm32-unknown-unknown

“pip: command not found”

On some systems, use pip3 instead:

pip3 install uv
